UK music festival survival guide: Stress-free tips for first-timers

It is festival season! Are you going to your first ever festival?

If you’re wondering what to pack, where to camp, and how to handle big crowds, then wonder no more! Here at BBC Bitesize, we understand the pressure and expectation that comes with going to a festival, especially a big event like Leeds or Reading.

Top tips to get your tent festival ready

Aidan's first full festival experience was at Reading a couple of years ago. On the day he and his group of friends arrived, it was raining, so they decided to take a pop-up tent. However, they soon realized it was too small for all their belongings. Learn from their mistake and do a test run before the festival.

Why going with people you know matters

Going to a festival with friends you trust is essential for a safe and enjoyable experience. Aidan recommends surrounding yourself with people who look out for you.

How to stay safe in a crowd

If you find yourself in a large crowd during a festival, ensure you get there early to secure a good spot. Look out for one another and be mindful of those around you for a positive atmosphere.

Festival Do’s and Don’ts

  • Take toilet paper, snacks, shower if possible, find shade in sunny weather, wear practical outfits, and check out the silent disco tent for a unique experience.

Feeling safe

If you ever feel overwhelmed at a festival, remember it's okay to step away and take a break. Aidan found many chill-out spots at Reading festival where he could relax and recharge.

A festival with your Mum?

Aidan hasn't been to a big festival with his Mum yet, but he hopes to attend Coachella together in the future. Stay tuned for a potential 'Alison Hammond: Coachella Unpacked' adventure!
