Hidden Health Challenge of Music Festivals Revealed

New research by global healthcare company Abbott has uncovered a hidden health challenge at UK music festivals. The study reveals the struggles faced by festival attendees living with chronic conditions like diabetes, shedding light on the need for better support in high-energy environments.

Research Uncovers Hidden Health Challenge

New research into UK music festivals, such as Creamfields returning to Warrington, has revealed a hidden health challenge that is rarely discussed. The study conducted by Abbott highlights that 65% of regular festival attendees have left early due to health issues at least once, with 10% deciding to stop attending festivals altogether due to these challenges.

The study focuses on chronic conditions, particularly diabetes, which is on the rise in the UK. Over 200,000 more people now depend on insulin compared to just three years ago. Despite the perceived concern of major medical emergencies among festival-goers without chronic conditions, those with chronic conditions stress over the daily management needed, especially in such unpredictable festival environments.

Challenges Faced by Attendees

  • Nearly 90% of attendees with chronic conditions experience stress, influenced by factors like lack of rest areas and concerns about hydration.
  • 13% choose not to share their health challenges to avoid burdening others, while 10% hide their condition due to fear of judgment.
  • Attendees can walk up to 30,000 steps a day with minimal sleep, adding to the overall physical strain, especially for those managing chronic conditions.

Importance of Preparation and Support

Lesley Mills, a Warrington-based consultant nurse, emphasizes the importance of preparation and planning ahead to manage health conditions at festivals. Attendees like Vanessa Haydock, who has Type 1 diabetes, utilize tools like continuous glucose monitoring systems to track and manage their condition effectively.

Despite the challenges, the research emphasizes a preparation gap, with only a small percentage of attendees bringing adequate medication and health tech to festivals.

Supporting Attendees with Chronic Conditions

Abbott's Julia Hammac underscores the importance of understanding the challenges faced by attendees with chronic conditions. With proper planning and support, festival-goers can enjoy the experience while effectively managing their health conditions.
