Brockwell Park in Lambeth will host six festivals this summer despite legal action challenging the council's decision. The events, including Mighty Hoopla and Lambeth Country Show, will continue as planned.
Festivals to go ahead in Brockwell Park this summer
Festivals at a south London park will still go ahead this summer despite last week's successful High Court challenge against Lambeth Council.
Brockwell Park in Lambeth hosts a series of events called Brockwell Live, attracting hundreds of thousands of people to six festivals, including Mighty Hoopla.
Legal Battle
Rebekah Shaman, a local resident and a member of the Protect Brockwell Park group, brought legal action against the council over the use of parts of the park for the festivals. Despite the challenge, the events are still scheduled to begin on 23 May.
Council Response
A Lambeth Council spokesperson stated that the parent company, Summer Events Ltd, had applied for a new certificate of lawfulness for 24 days. The council is currently considering the application, but the events will proceed as planned.
Campaigner's Perspective
Jen Hawkins, a campaigner from Protect Brockwell Park, expressed concerns about the council allowing the events to proceed without proper scrutiny. However, a spokesperson for Brockwell Live confirmed that all events in the series will go ahead, including the Lambeth Country Show.
High Court Ruling
The High Court ruling focused on a particular point of law regarding the use of the park for festivals for more than 28 days. Despite the ruling, Brockwell Live assured that no event will be canceled as a result.
Upcoming Events
The set-up for Friday's Wide Awake festival was nearly complete, and preparations for other events, such as the Mighty Hoopla festival, are underway.
