Greenwich Summer Sessions

Festival Crowd Header

After much speculation that Mark Ronson would cancel tonight’s gig, he walked out on stage with Dave McCabe the writer of the famous song ‘Valerie’ and they played an acoustic version of this song, every person in the crowd sang along.

Mark said “It’s been a really shit week but I’m glad I’m here playing music”, Mark Ronson swiftly went to the back of the stage and Kyle Falconer from the View came out and performed ‘The Bike Song’ and then Lose it (In the end) with Q Tip, You do it to yourself, then Rose Elinor Dougall out and sung OMG originally by Lily Allen, produced by Mark Ronson. Then ‘The Night last Night’, and the Alex Greenwald came out and said “I hope its okay if I sing one of my own songs” and he performed ‘California’ made famous by Phantom Planet a band Alex is in and the crowd instantly recognised it. Mark Ronson then said ‘This is the part of the set where I actually do something!’ and he began a DJ Set after asking us to forget the beautiful scenery of Greenwich and pretend we were in a seedy and disgusting club in New York he began the inpromptu dj set and said “I just want to hear this” and played Rehab famously sung by Amy Winehouse. Then Andrew Wyatt, singer of Miike Snow took to the stage to sing ‘Animal’ and "You Gave Me Nothing" with Rose Elinor Dougall and they also performed ‘Stop me’  and 'Somebody To Love Me' then ‘Bang Bang Bang’ and the band members left the stage and came bank on with Amy Winehouse’s backing singers of 10 years to sing ‘Back to Black’ and ‘Valerie’. It was a spectacular night and I am glad to have been a part of it and watched the gig live, it was such a fitting tribute to a brilliant singer by one of her closest friends.

The next night Status Quo took to the stage after Nine below zero and kicked off their set with ‘Sweet Caroline’, ‘Something bout you baby I like’, then ‘Rock n Roll n me’ from their new album 'Quid Pro Quo' then Green then ‘Beginning of the End’ and ‘2 by 2’, ‘What your proposing’ ‘Red Sky’, ‘Big Fat Mama’, ‘The Oriental’, ‘Lets Rock’. The quo played a brilliant set as usual, and they had everyone rocking out!

Londoners Squeeze, who recently reformed in 2007 took to the stage after an epic set by Turnin Brakes, they opened the set with Black Coffee in Bed’, and Glenn Tilbrook told the crowd “I can’t tell you how nice it is to be here” they then performed‘Is that love?’, ‘Labelled with love’, ‘When the hangover strikes’, and a slightly jazzy performance of ‘Slaughtered, gutted and heartbroken’ with Chris Difford. They carried on with ‘Loving you tonight (feels good)’,  then the drummer Simon Hanson jumped out from behind the drums and started drumming on a wine bottle and the band performed ‘Goodbye Girl’ and they performed ‘Another nail for my heart’, ‘Tempted’, ‘Take me im yours’, ‘Pulling muslces (from a shell), and left the best for last leaving ‘Cool for Cats’. Squeeze definitely put on a performance whether it is 1974 or 2011, a great gig!

The Greenwich Summer Sessions are a great set of gigs with brilliant genres of music and what a great way to bring the community of Greenwich toogether as well as bringing fans to the amazing town in London.
