The Llangollen Fringe Festival bursts each summer in a riot of music, comedy, and creative fun. Set in the beautiful town of Llangollen in Denbighshire's scenic Dee Valley, the festival transforms this riverside market town into a buzzing hub of arts and community for nine unforgettable days. Families, friends, and visitors from far and wide come together to enjoy a friendly, inclusive atmosphere where creativity and culture fill the streets and venues.
For over three decades the Fringe has been one of Wales' most cherished independent arts festivals. Each year's program is an eclectic mix, designed to have something for everyone. Expect live performances ranging from intimate acoustic sessions and folk bands to energetic rock and world music grooves, plus stand-up comedy nights, storytelling, theatre, dance, and more. Local musicians and emerging talent join national headliners on multiple stages, creating a rich lineup that blends the new with the familiar. With shows often held in town halls, community centres, pubs and even outdoor family-friendly venues, the variety keeps audiences entertained day and night. Special family-friendly shows and activities ensure even the youngest festivalgoers have plenty to enjoy.
This friendly festival is a true community affair, run entirely by volunteers and fuelled by local support. You might find yourself enjoying a surprise set at a village pub or a pop-up craft workshop in a park. A unique highlight is the 'Music Around Town' element, where pay-what-you-can performances bring free live music to Llangollen's favorite pubs and cafes. These relaxed afternoon sessions let you wander the charming streets with a coffee or pint in hand, discovering local artists and making new friends along the way.
Aside from the main program, the festival also offers hands-on workshops in dance, painting, writing, storytelling and more. These sessions spark creativity for all ages and abilities, giving you a chance to join in and learn something new. Even outside the scheduled events, Llangollen itself is full of charm: take a peaceful boat ride along the River Dee, admire the countryside from the famous Llangollen Railway or explore the historic Pontcysyllte Aqueduct nearby. Throughout the Fringe, it often feels like one big friendly street party, with visitors welcomed into impromptu jam sessions and colorful community gatherings.
Whether you're a music lover, a comedy fan, an artist, or just someone looking for a good time in a gorgeous setting, the Llangollen Fringe Festival promises nine days of fun, discovery and inspiration. Join us in Llangollen this July to see for yourself why our friendly festival has been winning hearts across North Wales for years. Keep an eye out for ticket announcements and festival passes - with so much on offer, the Llangollen Fringe is the perfect chance to make lifelong memories in the heart of North Wales.
Llangollen is easily reached by car. The town lies at the junction of two main roads: the A5 (the major route from Shrewsbury and beyond to Holyhead) and the A539 (linking Wrexham and Chester). There are several public car parks near the town centre, but spaces can fill up quickly during the busy festival days - so allow extra time for travel in July and aim to arrive early if possible.
Llangollen has no mainline train station. The nearest stations are Wrexham General and Ruabon (each about a 20-minute drive away). Wrexham is on the main line with frequent services from Shrewsbury, Birmingham and Manchester; Ruabon has connections to Shrewsbury and Chester. From either station, Arriva buses (Route 5/5E) run regularly to Llangollen, or you can take a taxi. Within town, local buses (such as the Arriva 64) connect Llangollen with nearby villages. Always check updated timetables - bus service may be limited on evenings and Sundays.
For air travelers, the nearest major airports are Liverpool John Lennon (about 70 miles east, with good UK and European connections) and Manchester (about 80 miles), both offering car hire and onward train links to North Wales. Birmingham Airport (around 100 miles) is another option for domestic or international flights. From any of these airports you can hire a car, or take a train or coach to Wrexham or Chester and continue by bus or taxi to Llangollen.
Llangollen offers a range of accommodation, but choices fill up early. You'll find friendly B&Bs, country inns and small hotels in town. Many pubs also have rooms for guests. For budget travelers, the Llangollen Hostel provides dormitory beds, cabins and a campsite. Tower Farm Holidays, just outside of town, offers glamping pods and caravan pitches. There are also self-catering cottages and guesthouses in the surrounding area. Be sure to book well in advance for July - if Llangollen is full, consider staying in nearby Chirk or Ruabon, both a short drive away.
