Wan Bushi is a breakcore project from Belgium associated with Circus Brekovic. It centres on uptempo electronic music and combines jungle, breakcore and some drum and bass.
Background
Wan Bushi describes the music as a mix of energetic styles rather than a single genre, with jungle and breakcore at its core and drum and bass also part of the sound. The project also presents itself as a live performance act, not only a studio production project.
Musical approach
The music draws on a wide range of influences. Earlier listening includes commercial dance music from the 1990s, followed by metal, including hardcore metal, progressive metal and symphonic metal. Electronic music then becomes more central, especially trip hop and drum and bass. That shift matters because the project comes from a drummer’s preference for break-driven rhythms over straight 4/4 techno patterns.
Wan Bushi also has a background in playing instruments. Drums are the main instrument, and they remain the instrument played for the longest time. Piano lessons and violin also form part of the early musical training.
Style and development
The first solo productions are strongly influenced by drum and bass, and the current direction brings together earlier influences with newer breakcore ideas. The result is described as jungle-breakcore shaped by a broad range of past listening and practical experience as a drummer and multi-instrumentalist.
