The Infinite Three

The Infinite Three are a London-based group active since 2009. The project forms around R. Allen and Daniel Knowler, with Sam McClaughlin joining after the band’s first recording. Allen’s other groups include Halo, un- and Leisur Hive, while Knowler is also linked with Leisur Hive, Sweetie and Cindytalk; McClaughlin also plays in Debbie Leggo and Pants Nest. The band develops out of Leisur Hive and seeks to extend ideas that earlier project could not pursue.

Style and approach

The group works across noise, improvisation, found sound, dub, metal and electronic music, and is described through tags including noise rock, minimalist, abstract guitar noise, big beat and “musical terrorrism”. Their releases often move between harsh, abstract textures and more groove-led material, alongside long-form ambient collage.

Releases

The Infinite Three’s first release is the work-in-progress EP Medium Term Strategy. It is followed by the first entry in their seasonal drone-collage series, WINTER SOLSTICE XXI-XII-MMX, and then the single Is Erased and the debut album Crust Of Utopia, both in 2011. Another seasonal release, WINTER SOLSTICE XXI-XII-MMXI, appears later that year, establishing the Winter Solstice series as an annual tradition, usually issued as one long abstract sonic collage.

In 2012 the band releases the four-song The Rattle Belly EP, with a video for Feathers directed by Peter Dahl Collins. Robert Allen leaves the group in October 2012 and is replaced on drums and percussion by Paul Middleton, who is also associated with God and Cindytalk.

Later work

The album Songs of the Breather is recorded in London at Willie Nash’s Studio and released in 2014. It expands the band’s sound into heavier, more groove-based pieces such as The Tongue and Bone Star, while also moving further into ambient territory on New Skin Breathers. After a period of live work and solo activity from Daniel Knowler and Sam McClaughlin, the group works at One Cat Studios in London with producer and engineer Jon Clayton on Lucky Beast.
