The Glitter Band

The Glitter Band are a British glam rock and pop group that begin as backing and session musicians for Gary Glitter in 1972 and remain active from 1973 onwards. They provide the backing music for Glitter’s chart hits and develop a distinctive, heavy concert sound that supports his live shows around the world.

Formation and early role

The band starts out as the support unit for Gary Glitter, working both in the studio and on stage. Their role includes backing his successful singles as well as supplying the powerful big-beat sound associated with his concerts. The group is based in the United Kingdom.

Original line-up

The original members include Gerry Shephard on lead guitar and vocals, John Springate on bass and vocals, Pete Phipps on drums and keyboards, John Rossall on saxophone, trombone and musical direction, Pete Gill on drums, Tony Leonard on drums, and Harvey Ellison on saxophone. John Rossall is listed as a member, and Gary Glitter is associated with the group’s early period.

Later activity

The Glitter Band continue touring with original members Pete Phipps and John Springate. Gerry Shephard dies on 6 May 2003.
