The Egyptian Lover

The Egyptian Lover is an electro and hip hop artist from Los Angeles, United States, born in 1963. He begins as a DJ in Lafayette, Louisiana before moving to Los Angeles, where he promotes dance events with Unique Dreams Entertainment. In 1983 the company changes its name to Uncle Jamm’s Army, and he helps organise early hip-hop dance parties at the L.A. Sports Arena and in Torrance that draw crowds of more than 10,000.

Early recording work and solo breakthrough

His first recording appears in 1983 as a member of The Radio Crew. Later that year he contributes to “Dial-A-Freak” for Uncle Jamm’s Army. In 1984 he releases his debut solo single, “Egypt, Egypt”, which becomes a club hit and establishes his name as a solo artist.

Singles, albums and production work

He goes on to record a run of dance and local club tracks including “And My Beat Goes Boom”, “What Is a DJ If He Can’t Scratch”, “Girls”, “You’re so Fine”, “The Lover”, “Sexy Style”, “The Alesby Inn” and “Freak a Holic”. His 1984 album On the Nile is moderately successful, while his later LPs are less popular than his singles. Other albums listed include One Track Mind (1986), Filthy (1988), The King of Ecstasy (His Greatest Hits) (1989), Back from the Tomb (1994), Pyramix (1996), Get Into It (1998) and Platinum Pyramids (2006). He also issues the Egypt, Egypt EP in 1983.

Later career, label and collaborations

After a break in the early 1990s, he returns in 1994 with Back from the Tomb, his first full-length release in more than ten years. He later founds his own label, Egyptian Empire Records, which includes acts such as Rodney O & Joe Cooley. In 2005 he releases the single “Party” backed with “Dancefloor”, and in 2006 he records “UFO” and “Futuristic” with jamie Jupiter for the Keep it Hot 12-inch. He also collaborates with Warp Records musician Jimmy Edgar in 2006.

Touring and membership

He tours internationally, performing his DJ and live style in clubs and arenas. He begins touring in 2004 and continues to play shows in Europe. His associated acts include Uncle Jamm’s Army and Egypt Ear Werk.
