Somatic Responses

Somatic Responses are a Welsh group active from 1994 to the present. The project is made up of the brothers John Healy and Paul Healy, with Potere Occulto also listed as a member. The group comes from a small industrial mining community in southwest Wales.

Style and approach

Their music centres on complex, broken rhythms and heavily distorted electronic textures, with a mix of force and sweetness in the sound. They are associated with breakcore, IDM and techno, and are also tagged with rhythmic noise and industrial.

Releases and labels

Somatic Responses operate their own label, Photon Emissions. They also appear on releases and tracks through Component Records, Viral Conspiracy Records, Touched, Blackwater Label, Zuur, Thac0 Records, Ketacore, Section 27, Immigrant Breast Nest and Gabbaret Records. Their work includes several releases on Component Records and Viral Conspiracy Records, four exclusive tracks on Touched Bass and Touched 2-3, an exclusive track on Blackwater Label’s Kapvt Mvndi sublabel, one release on Zuur, one release and one remix on Thac0 Records, and exclusive tracks on Ketacore, Section 27, Immigrant Breast Nest and Gabbaret Records.

The group is also linked with Welsh Modular Alliance and appears in interview material credited to DJ Entox of The Skreem, Flint Michigan for Shimmer, Mnemonic, Brett Stephan and a 2000 Berlin interview titled “No more booze until we finished”.
