The Detroit Rock Bottom are a rap group and record label started in Detroit in June 1997 by Rafael “Rock” Howard, who acts as founder and CEO. Their catalogue includes From the Bottom Up, Alligator City, Who Is Rock Bottom? and Blow: Based on True Stories. Big Herk leaves the group and label in late 2003. The roster also includes Tango & Cash, Blackface, J-Nutty, Screwface and Thug Division, with members including T-Dot, Duke, Flame, Squash and B-Floyd.
The blues artist Rock Bottom, also identified as David York, starts playing harmonica and singing blues in 1966 after beginning at the age of eighteen. He plays in west central Florida jook joints, including The Honey Dripper, The Palms, Richard Fun Spot in Bradenton, the Club Toro and the Manhattan Lounge in Sarasota, and the Wagon Wheel in Palmetto. His bands serve as a base for Florida blues musicians through the 1970s and 1980s, and he tours Scandinavia and Europe more than 30 times from 1981. His 1993 release Harmaniac appears on Danger Zone Records.
