Pinkshinyultrablast

Pinkshinyultrablast is a five-piece group from Sankt-Peterburg, Russia, active since 2007. The band works in shoegaze, dream pop and noise pop, and the line-up is Igor on bass, Lyubov on vocals, Sergey on drums, Rustam on synths and electronics, and Roman on guitars.

Style and influences

The group’s sound combines melodic songwriting with shoegaze textures, icy electronics and a spacious, dream-like production style. It is associated with the atmosphere of late 1980s and early 1990s British shoegaze and dream pop, and is also linked with wider experimental and ambient-influenced music. The band is compared to acts such as Slowdive, The Cocteau Twins, Lush, Ride, Sabres of Paradise and Global Communication, while also drawing parallels with Cluster, Popol Vuh, Terry Riley and Philip Glass. The band says that it set out to make something different from a local indie scene it found dull.

Release history

The single “Umi” is released on Club AC30 and is described as representative of an album full of melodic material. The track is presented as complex but accessible, with a modern edge rather than a simple revival of earlier shoegaze.

Name

The band name comes from an Astrobrite album, reflecting an interest in the space between ambient music, heavy guitars and pop.
