Peter Broderick
Peter Broderick is a US musician and composer from Searsmont, United States. He is associated with indie folk, modern classical and singer-songwriter music, and his solo work often centres on piano and strings.
Background
Born in 1987, Broderick grows up in a musical family and begins violin lessons at the age of seven. In high school he starts learning a wide range of instruments, including piano, guitar, banjo, mandolin and musical saw. After high school he moves to Portland, Oregon, where he studies music theory and filmmaking.
He becomes active in several bands in Portland and works as a session musician in local recording studios, including for M. Ward. He also plays and tours with ensembles such as Horse Feathers, M. Ward, She & Him, Norfolk & Western and Laura Gibson.
Efterklang and ensemble work
Broderick joins the Danish band Efterklang in late 2007 after being invited to move to Copenhagen and join their live group. He tours internationally with them, playing hundreds of concerts and often opening shows as a solo performer. He is also a member of Horse Feathers, Oliveray, La Nuit and Constant Presence.
Solo recordings and compositions
His solo recordings begin in 2007 with mainly instrumental, piano-based releases. In 2008 he releases Home, a more folk-oriented record that brings him wider critical attention. In 2009 he releases Music for Falling From Trees, a 30-minute work in seven parts written for a contemporary dance production by London choreographer Adrienne Hart and the company Neon Productions. For that piece he uses only piano and strings, creating the score under a restriction that excludes other instruments.
He also releases These Walls of Mine in 2012. Across his solo work, he moves between instrumental composition and more song-based material while keeping piano and strings central to much of the music.
