Papa Topo

Papa Topo is a Spanish indie pop group from Binissalem, Spain, active since 2008. The act is a duo made up of Adrià Arbona Orero and Paulita Demaiz.

The project begins with Arbona making music from early childhood, while Demaiz studies chimes and choir in Binissalem, a town in Mallorca. Arbona develops a strong interest in indie pop at 13 after reading about independent cinema in a magazine and looking up the term online. Camera Obscura becomes an important early influence, and their 2006 concert in Mallorca is the first he attends without his parents.

Arbona’s tastes expand into twee pop, which becomes the style he listens to most, alongside influences from riot grrrl, punk pop and yé-yé. He also spends summers listening to Camera Obscura, La Casa Azul and Belle and Sebastian, and discovers 1980s and 1990s pop through a Rough Trade compilation, including Heavenly and Beat Happening. He then starts writing songs.

Papa Topo debuts with the single “Oso Panda” on Elefant Records.
