NeedToBreathe
NeedToBreathe is an American band from Seneca, South Carolina, active since 2000. Their music is generally described as Christian rock, and also crosses into country rock and southern rock. The group includes Bear Rinehart, Bo Rinehart, Joe Stillwell, Seth Bolt, David Leonard, Tyler Burkum, Randall Harris and Josh Lovelace.
Background
The band forms in Seneca and is led by the Rinehart brothers, Bear and Bo, who grow up as pastor’s sons in rural South Carolina. Joe Stillwell plays drums and Seth Bolt plays bass. The group first forms in 1998, before its active period begins in 2000.
Albums and live profile
NeedToBreathe builds a reputation as a strong live act through constant touring. Their album The Outsiders reaches No. 9 on Billboard’s Rock Albums chart and enters the Top 20 of the Billboard 200. It also helps the band sell out venues including Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium and Chicago’s House of Blues, and it leads to placements in films and prime-time television programmes. Their later album The Reckoning is written by Bear and Bo Rinehart and is presented by the band as a record shaped by serious personal and social themes.
Song themes
On The Reckoning, “Maybe They’re On To Us” deals with paranoia and self-questioning. “White Fences” considers the American dream and the idea of rebuilding after disappointment. “Slumber” is about noticing beauty that is already present but not seen, while “Drive All Night” rejects the idea to escape from problems by running away. The album is described as rooted in classic American rock and roll while also moving in unexpected directions.
Style and identity
The band’s work combines melodic rock songwriting with Christian themes and a sound that draws on American rock traditions. Their emphasis on direct, memorable choruses and live performance remains central to their identity.
