Nano Stern

Nano Stern is a Chilean singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist from Santiago, Chile. He begins playing music before he can remember, studies the violin for many years, and later takes up guitar after following the example of his sister, Claudia. His work spans rock, Latin music, classical, funk, contemporary styles and gypsy influences, which he combines across a range of instruments and projects.

Career

He moves to Europe in 2004 and begins a solo career that leads to two albums and touring in Europe and South America. In Germany, he works closely with producer Tato Gomez and records most of the songs for his solo debut with him. In 2007, he releases his second solo album, Voy y Vuelvo, which receives praise from the Chilean media.

After arriving in Amsterdam in 2005, he meets Philippe Lemm and they form Wazabe, a band he describes as feeling like a family. He later spends a year in the Dutch capital playing with different groups, including La Parranda, which performs Colombian cumbias and vallenatos, and Caspian Hat Dance, a gypsy swing group. During this period, he studies in the jazz department of the Amsterdam Conservatory and becomes part of the local music scene.

Collaborations and projects

He produces Indo(cumentados)’s debut album, Reciclaje Latinoamericano, with Pablo Fagundez. He also produces Gavin Mee’s second album, Mee Mantras, and works with Manuel García and Catalonian musician Guillamino on eXile, a multicultural project centred on poetry written in exile by Pablo Neruda and Pera Cuar.

Later work

After seven years of travelling, Stern settles in Santiago in 2012. In 2013, he edits La Cosecha, a collection of Latin American songs that includes three songs written by him.
