Marvellous Cain

Marvellous Cain is a London-based jungle producer and DJ, also known as Marvin Cain. He emerges from the UK rave and hardcore scene, moving into jungle by the middle of the 1990s and becoming associated in particular with ragga jungle.

Early releases and breakthrough records

During jungle’s ragga period in 1993 and 1994, Cain scores a series of notable tracks, including The Hitman and Dub Plate Style. His first hit, Hitman, uses a substantial sample from a Cutty Ranks record, which leads to a dispute that he resolves by agreeing to remixes for Cutty rather than going to court.

Labels and collaborations

Before signing to Suburban Base in 1995, Cain releases material on I.Q., the label run by Sponge, and works with Sponge and Pascal, who later becomes part of Ganja Kru. In that period he records under several names, including Lion Man, Badman and Gunman.

Cain later sets up his own label, Runninz, after I.Q. ends. On Runninz he releases tracks as Runninz Kru and CoCain, while also continuing to issue music on Sub Base, reducing that label’s output to around three singles a year.

Albums and later activity

In 1996, Cain issues Gun Talk on Sub Base, a full-length release built around his best-known tracks with a few new recordings included. He remains active as a DJ at international level.
