Man With No Name is the recording name of Martin Freeland, a UK goa trance, psytrance and trance producer and DJ. He is also known by the initials M.W.N.N. and is associated with The Infinity Project.

Career

Freeland begins his career as a techno producer in 1988, when he appears on the compilation Urban Acid, released on Urban, a sub-label of Polydor. The collection sells more than 65,000 copies. He then releases several techno EPs before moving towards trance in the early 1990s.

In 1996 he releases his first full-length album, Moment of Truth, on Concept in Dance. The album includes goa trance and melodic trance material, among it “Sugar Rush”, which also appears as an EP, and “Teleport”, a heavy goa trance track that becomes a classic. In 1998 he releases Earth Moving The Sun on Paul Oakenfold’s Perfecto label via East West. This album keeps a mix of heavy goa trance and melodic trance, but moves further away from techno towards a more melodic, experimental and house-influenced sound.

From Earth Moving The Sun, he issues two EPs: “The First Day (Horizon)”, featuring vocals by Mark Gardener, and “Vavoom!”, which includes house remixes by De Niro. In 2000 he releases Teleportation on Dragonfly Records, returning to a label he had left in the mid-1990s. The album includes earlier tracks such as “Teleport”, “Sly-Ed”, “Lunar Cycle” and “Neuro Tunnel”, and shifts back towards a heavier, more techno-influenced sound.

His 2003 album Interstate Highway, also on Dragonfly Records, shows a further change towards psytrance, with lighter grooves and more transparent textures. After that, he issues standalone tracks that appear on compilations, including “String Theory”, “Critical Mass” and “Dirty Trick”.

Remixes

Freeland also remixes a range of artists, including Human League, Marmion, Disco Volante and Art of Trance, with versions of “These Are The Days”, “Schoneberg”, “Moonraker” and “Octopus”.

Style

His work is characterised by heavy basslines, raw grooves and explicit melody lines, and he is regarded as a defining figure in goa and psytrance.
