Lumen

Lumen are a Russian rock band from Ufa, Russia, active from 1998. The group forms around Рустем Булатов and is known for work that sits across alternative metal, alternative rock, punk and rock. It begins in 1998 and develops into one of the better-known Russian alternative acts within a few years.

Formation and early releases

The band forms on 12 February 1998 in Ufa. The line-up named in the available material includes Rustem “Tem” Bulatov, Igor “Garick” Mamaev, Denis “Den” Shahanov and Evgeni “John” Ognev. By 2002, Lumen issues its first white-label release, a concert recording from the Navigator club in Ufa. That same year, the song “Sid & Nancy” becomes a radio hit and helps establish the group with a teenage audience. Other tracks, including “C4” and “Сколько” (“How much?”), also gain radio play, while “Государство” (“State”) becomes one of the most requested songs on the A-One channel.

Albums, live releases and labels

After the early radio success, Lumen releases Без консервантов (“No Preservatives Added”) through a major Russian label, followed by Три пути (“Three Ways”) in 2004. Two songs from that album become radio hits. In 2005 the group issues its first official live album, Одной крови (“One blooded”), and later that year releases Свобода (“Freedom”), recorded in Ufa with sound producer Vlad Savvateev, also known as D-Rain. In 2006 it releases its first official DVD, Дыши! (“Breathe!”). Another live release, Правда? (“Truth?”), appears in 2007, along with the live DVD/CD Буря (“Tempest”).

Recognition and touring

Lumen receives several Russian music awards in the 2000s. In 2007 it wins Fuzz magazine’s prize for Best New Band and takes two RAMP Awards for Best Album of 2007 and Best Band of 2007. In 2008 it is named Band of the Year at the RAMP Awards and also receives a Fuzz award for Album of the Year. The group moves from smaller venues and shared bills to headline concerts in major Russian venues, and its tours include extensive runs across Russian cities and into CIS countries.

Style and approach

The band is described as working without a fixed label identity, combining elements of alternative music and punk while focusing on direct, uncompromising songs. Its live performances are presented as intense and emotional, which helps draw large audiences. Lumen also continues to release material independently when record-label arrangements do not meet expectations, and it works with producer and manager Vadim Bazeev, who becomes part of the team and helps shape its later direction.
