In-Flight Safety
In-Flight Safety is a Canadian indie rock group from Sackville, Canada, active since 2003. The band is made up of Brad Goodsell, Daniel Ledwell, John Mullane, Glen Nicholson and Chris Pennell.
Overview
The group develops a melodic indie rock sound and builds its profile through live performance, radio appearances, festival showcases and recordings that reach audiences in North America and Europe. Its early work includes The Coast is Clear and We Are an Empire, My Dear, both of which help establish a fan base in North America, the UK and Germany.
Career
In-Flight Safety performs widely in the years around its early albums, including a BBC Radio appearance in London and a showcase at SXSW. During this period the band is described as outward-looking and active on the road.
In 2011, John Mullane spends time scoring films and Glen Nicholson studies architecture, while the band has a record’s worth of new material in progress. From this period of reflection and collaboration, Mullane and Nicholson shape Conversationalist.
Conversationalist
Conversationalist is a ten-track album built from extended conversation and collaboration between Mullane and Nicholson. It draws inspiration from contemporary indie bands including Wild Nothing, The Walkmen and DIIV. The album combines guitar hooks, darker imagery and detailed production, and Gus van Go mixes it in Brooklyn, New York.
The record is presented as a balance of light and dark, with a playful side alongside more mysterious and haunting material. It follows the band’s earlier work while moving toward a more adventurous and direct approach.
Style and recognition
The band’s music is described as thoughtful and melodic, with a strong focus on production and atmosphere. Over the years it gains praise and accolades, including television placements and awards.
