How to Dress Well
How to Dress Well is the stage name of Tom Krell, a songwriter and producer from Boulder, United States. He works in alternative R&B, ambient, electronic and pop, and is also associated with lo-fi, experimental and psychedelic sounds. The act is listed as a person, with Cokc Dokc also named as a member.
Career
Krell begins releasing music in 2009 after moving from Brooklyn to Berlin. At first he posts a series of free digital EPs online under anonymity on his blog. His early work combines falsetto vocals with fractured R&B-influenced beats, as well as noise, sound collage and avant-garde composition.
Love Remains establishes his profile and receives wide critical attention. Tracks such as “Ready for the World” and “Decisions” become especially noted, and the record is linked with the emergence of a slowed, narcotised form of R&B that is later echoed by other artists.
Later work
After Love Remains, Krell tours internationally, records the orchestral EP Just Once, and directs proceeds from it towards awareness of mental illness. He continues writing and recording new material while also working on a philosophy doctorate. His album Total Loss follows as another major release in his catalogue.
