Detroit Social Club

Detroit Social Club are a group from the United Kingdom, formed in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, England in 2007. They play psychedelic blues rock, and are also associated with indie rock, shoegaze, and electro rock.

Career

The band signs to Fiction Records and later releases its debut album, Existence, before setting up its own label, FUCK POP. Its first single, “Rivers and Rainbows”, appears in September 2008 as a limited-edition 7-inch release with “Silver” on the B-side. A second single, “Sunshine People”, follows in March 2009 on 7-inch and as a download.

During 2009, Detroit Social Club tours widely across the United Kingdom and supports Primal Scream, Razorlight, The Futureheads and Oasis. British music magazines, including NME, tip the band for wider national success.

Style and influences

The band describes its music as a form of analogue experimentation, combining retro big-beat, gospel influence and junkie folk, with a 1970s New York feel. It says it is not directly influenced by Oasis, The Verve, Primal Scream and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, but inspired by them.

Members

David Burn is the named member associated with the group. He describes himself as a “vibe creator” rather than simply a songwriter, saying that the words and other people’s responses are only part of what he makes around the music.

Album Existence

Existence is produced by Jim Abbiss, who works with Kasabian and Arctic Monkeys, alongside Dave Burn of Detroit Social Club. The album includes “Kiss The Sun”, “Northern Man”, “Black And White”, “Chemistry”, “Rivers And Rainbows”, “Silver”, “Sunshine People”, “Lights Of Life” and “Prophecy”.

The songs are presented as moving from doubt and uncertainty towards optimism and renewal, with “Prophecy” placed as a closing track and singled out as a major live song.
