Alexander O'Neal is an American R&B singer, songwriter and arranger from Natchez, Mississippi. Born in 1953, he comes to prominence in the mid-1980s as a solo artist.

Career

O'Neal achieves eleven Top 40 singles on the US R&B chart, with three of those also reaching the Top 40 of the Billboard Hot 100. He has greater mainstream success in the United Kingdom, where he places fourteen singles in the UK Top 40 between 1985 and 1996 and reaches the top ten of the UK Albums Chart with three albums.

His debut album is the self-titled Alexander O'Neal, which appears in 1985. He later releases nine studio albums, six compilation albums and two live albums. His solo work includes songs such as "If You Were Here Tonight", "Fake", "Criticize", "The Lovers", "(What Can I Say) To Make You Love Me", "All True Man", "Love Makes No Sense" and "In the Middle".

Collaborations and style

O'Neal is also known for duets with Cherrelle, his Tabu labelmate, including "Saturday Love" and "Never Knew Love Like This". His voice is described as having a grain and range similar to Otis Redding's.
